The list of the most stolen cars in Delhi has the Maruti WagonR and Swift at the top. Unfortunately, the capital is the most dangerous place when it comes to car thefts. In fact, a recent report by Acko confirms that on average, 105 cars were reported to be stolen every day in 2023. This comes out to be an alarming 1 car every 14 minutes. Furthermore, around 47% of all cars stolen come from Maruti Suzuki. That is understandable since it is also the largest carmaker in the country. By default, there are significantly more Maruti Suzuki cars on the roads than any other brand.

Maruti WagonR and Swift are the Most Stolen Cars
On this list, the WagonR and Swift are at the top. Again, that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone since both these are among the highest-selling cars in our market for decades now. The WagonR has been on sale in India since 1999, while the Swift has been selling since 2005. Their demand is still at an all-time high even today. Therefore, it makes for prominent targets for the miscreants. Apart from that, the other vehicles in this undesirable list include the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Grand i10 and Maruti Dzire. Again, all these are mass-market cars with extremely high monthly sales.

Going for such cars makes sense for the thieves since they can easily sell these off or dismantle them and sell their spare parts. That is the thing with popular cars. There is always a demand for their components in the market. Therefore, by stealing these cars, the mischievous elements can either directly sell the entire vehicle, which is a bit difficult, or remove the main parts and sell them instead. We can only hope that things get better going forward.

Author’s Note
While in terms of the number of car theft cases, Delhi is at the top, it is encouraging to see that the overall share of thefts was 37% in 2023 in comparison to 56% in 2022. This share is calculated in contrast to other cities. Hence, it is clear that the situation is getting better. We expect things to get even more favourable with proper action by the authorities.
