In this post, I shall compare the similarly-priced variants of the new Maruti Swift and Tata Altroz. We are considering the price range of around Rs 8 lakh. I feel a lot of car buyers will hope to buy a car at this price point. Note that the Swift was recently launched in its fourth generation avatar in India. It has been around since 2005. With close to 20 years of existence, it still commands extremely high demand in India. The new Swift comes with improved safety, a new engine and updated aesthetics. On the other hand, Tata Altroz is the only hatchback in the country with a full 5-star safety rating. That has been its appeal for a long time. Let us compare the two on the basis of prices, specs and features.
Maruti Swift vs Tata Altroz – Price Comparison
Since price is the basis of this comparison, I have chosen the Zxi version of the new Maruti Swift which has a retail price of Rs 8.29 lakh, ex-showroom. It is second from the top, which is generally considered the most value-for-money trim. On the other hand, I am selecting the XT version of the Altroz. It sells for Rs 8.10 lakh, ex-showroom. Note that even the XM Plus S version also costs the same. But it has a sunroof. In any case, there is a difference of just Rs 19,000. Hence, we could consider them almost similarly priced.
Price Comparison | Maruti Swift (Zxi) | Tata Altroz (XT) | Difference |
Ex-Showroom | Rs 8.29 lakh | Rs 8.10 lakh | Rs 19,000 |

To get the AMT version, you will need to shell out Rs 50,000 extra.
On the other hand, the Tata Altroz has a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine which makes 88 PS and 115 Nm of peak power and torque. This engine pairs with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed DCA transmission. Our View
It goes without saying that both of these are compelling offerings. I understand that these don’t necessarily belong to the same segment. But the price overlap can make it a bit confusing for the potential car buyers. Among these, the Swift is pricier because it is the second-from-top trim It gets the latest bells and whistles. If you are looking for mileage and the latest convenience features, going for the new Swift makes sense. On the other hand, if you are on a strict budget, or want the options of multiple powertrains and the top safety amenities, Tata Altroz should be your pick.
