The hatchback is already among the most fuel-efficient vehicles on sale in the country
Maruti Swift is about to get even more frugal when it comes to fuel consumption as the hybrid iteration has been spotted. Now, it remains to be seen whether this is a strong hybrid or a regular hybrid. We know that Maruti Suzuki already offers a strong hybrid mill with the Grand Vitara. It boasts a mileage of a jaw-dropping 27.97 km/l. That is a considerably bigger engine and the SUV is much heavier. Therefore, if the Swift receives the strong hybrid mill, it will definitely be good for over 28 km/l. Let us take a look at the details here.
Maruti Swift to Get Even More Fuel Efficient
We were able to get these images courtesy of Team BHP. These showcase the rear section of a test mule of the iconic Swift. It is plying on a busy public road. However, the aspect which catches our eye is the Hybrid badge on the right side of the boot lid. Generally, it should represent a dedicated hybrid powertrain and not some mild hybrid mill. Remember, many Maruti cars come with a mild hybrid configuration but don’t flaunt this badge. Therefore, it is possible that this is a strong hybrid mill. Apart from that, there are no modifications to the design.
Now, it is not beyond the scope of possibility that Maruti Suzuki is testing this model in India due to the fact that it uses India as an export base for the world. Hence, there are two possibilities – it could try to sell it in our market, OR, it might manufacture it here to export to other markets. Remember, Maruti used to make 3-door Jimny in India even though it was never on sale here. In any case, a strong hybrid model would incur a lot of cost which will increase the price of Swift quite a bit. In a price-conscious market like India, it might not remain a value-for-money proposition especially since the regular model offers close to 25 km/l already.
My View
Even though the famed hatchback has been undergoing road test in India with this hybrid badge, I don’t believe it will offer it to the Indian customers simply due to the price concerns. We have seen that hybrid cars are substantially more expensive than their ICE counterparts. Hence, it will most likely won’t make any sense since the Swift already belongs to a specific price bracket in India. Having said that, one can never be too sure unless the Indo-Japanese carmaker announces anything officially.
