We put the specs of the Maruti Suzuki XL6 vs Renault Lodgy to see how one of the oldest MPVs in the segment compares against the newest one on paper.
Maruti Suzuki launched the new XL6 in India yesterday at a starting price of Rs. 9.79 lakh ex-showroom. The XL6 is basically a premium MPV based on the Heartect platform and shares its underpinnings with the Ertiga. Maruti has positioned the XL6 as a more premium offering than the Ertiga and it would be retailing through Maruti’s Nexa showrooms. In our market, the XL6 competes with the likes of the Mahindra Marazzo, the Renault Lodgy and the Honda BR-V as well.
Here we take a closer look at how the new Maruti Suzuki Ertiga fares on paper against one of the older cars in the segment, the Renault Lodgy.

In terms of engine options available, both cars come with only one engine option. That too, the XL6 only gets a petrol engine whereas the Lodgy gets only a diesel engine. They are still very evenly matched on paper in terms of power figures. The Lodgy just has 5 bhp more than the XL6.
However, the Lodgy, having a diesel engine, obviously has significantly more torque than the petrol engine in the XL6. Being offered with a diesel engine only, the Renault Lodgy is also the more fuel efficient of the two. Still, the XL6 with the manual gearbox still comes pretty close with a petrol engine. Talking of gearboxes, while the XL6 has the option of a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter, the Lodgy only gets a 5-speed manual.
Maruti Suzuki XL6 vs Renault Lodgy – Dimensions

In terms of dimensions, both cars are have an edge over the other is some aspect or the other. The Renault Lodgy is longer while the Maruti Suzuki XL6 is wider. The Maruti Suzuki XL6 has greater ground clearance of the two but the Lodgy is still taller. The Lodgy also has the longer wheelbase of the two, but that contributes to a little longer turning radius for the Lodgy than the XL6.
The greater dimensions of the Lodgy means that it is also heavier than the XL6 and that too by quite some bit. However, the Lodgy wears larger 195/55 R16 section tires which contributes to better proportions for the car.
Exterior Design
The face of the XL6 is completely new and looks very attractive with a more upright nose and a flatter hood. It only borrows the doors and the tailgate from the regular Ertiga and the rest of the car has been completely redesigned. The grille has been redesigned as well and now features two chrome strips running through it which continue into the headlamps cluster as the DRLs. The headlamp unit itself has been redesigned and the car also gets body claddings all around with silver skid plates on the front and rear bumper and roof rails too.
In comparison, the Renault Lodgy feels a little dated now. The Lodgy also gets body cladding all-around and silver skid plates on the bumpers but apart from that, the Lodgy does not have much stylistic elements to boast of. The large grille with the chrome inserts still give it some flare but the headlamps are quite basic with no LED DRLs and the rear profile of the car looks too utilitarian in comparison to the XL6.

Interior Design
The interior layout is similar to the regular Ertiga but while the regular Ertiga comes with beige interiors, the XL6 gets an all-black theme. The biggest highlight of the XL6’s interiors would be the two captain seats in the second row instead of the bench seat on the Ertiga. Also, even the third row seats come with reclining function. The dashboard gets the 7.0-inch infotainment screen with a black faux-wood inlay with silver inserts. The steering wheels also gets silver inserts and it gets automatic climate controls as well.
The interiors of the Lodgy are again quite basic. It gets a dual-tone finish and there are options of either a bench seat or captain seats in the second row. The touchscreen infotainment system is quite basic and there are piano black inserts around it as well. There’s no automatic climate control and the circular AC vents look awkwardly stuck on. Fit and finish of materials could also have been much better.

Pricing
Model | Maruti Suzuki XL6 | Renault Lodgy |
Price | Rs 9.80-11.46 lakh | Rs 8.63-12.11 lakh |
Although the Renault Lodgy has a lower base price than the XL6, the top-end of the XL6 is quite cheaper than the Lodgy. Moreoevr, considering the looks and features of both the cars, the XL6 is clearly the better value for money among the two. Yes, the Renault has the advantage of a diesel engine and good practicality but the XL6 is not far behind in either respect, even with its petrol engine.
