The Maruti Suzuki XL5 is based on the WagonR and is essentially a more premium cousin of the WagonR with several styling updates and more features.
Maruti Suzuki has quite an exciting year ahead of them. They will also have one of the most exciting stands at the 2020 Auto Expo. Maruti Suzuki will debuting the petrol-powered Brezza, Futuro-E EV, Ignis facelift, BS6 models and a premium version of the Wagon R, which is being called the XL5. Now, the XL5 has been spotted testing on our roads along with another camouflaged car which appears to be 2020 Vitara Brezza.
Last year, Maruti Suzuki brought out the XL6 which is a more premium and upmarket version of the Ertiga. In a similar fashion, the XL5 is a more premium cousin on the humble WagonR. In fact, Maruti Suzuki India first used the XL nomenclature for the Grand Vitara XL-7 back in 2003.
Although the car is heavily camouflaged in the spy images, we can still make out certain design elements of the XL5. On the face, the car will sport a split headlamp design with a slim grille. The split headlamp design is the latest trend in cars and we see it on cars like the Tata Harrier, Hyundai Venue and even the Renault Kwid. The overall silhouette remains identical to the Wagon R. Even the headlamps could see some LED elements for more differentiation. The spied test mule was also seen wearing 15-inch alloy wheels that we see on the Ignis.

Although we have not seen any glimpse of the interiors of the XL5, we are expecting the car to come with a different color scheme. You could also see some different trim materials being used to give it a more premium feeling. Expected features include projector headlamps, automatic climate control and automatic headlamps. Suzuki’s Smart Play audio system will also be on offer.

Under the hood, the Maruti Suzuki XL5 will be powered by the K12B 1.2-litre engine. Its the same engine that is used in the standard WagonR and it produces 81 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. Transmission options might include a 5-speed manual and an AMT. Currently, the WagonR is priced between Rs 4.42 lakh and Rs 5.91 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The new XL5 will be more expensive than the WagonR and being a premium offering, we expect it to be retailed through the Nexa dealerships.
