Small car segment is the hottest car segment in India in terms of sales figures and who knows this fact better than the India’s largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, which receives more than half of their sales numbers form small and economic cars. Maruti Wagon R has been a very popular car for a long time because it offers very good compact package with good interior space, nice power, decent handling and good fuel economy. But with the years passing, the good fuels economy is not good enough as the petrol prices are roaring almost every second month. The new trend is to go for diesel cars or CNG cars wherever CNG is available. Few months back, Chevrolet India launched their Chevrolet Beat Diesel small car, which is one of the most fuel efficient small passenger cars in India. The sales of Beat Diesel speak for themselves as the running cost of a small diesel car is almost one third compared to same segment of petrol car.

Maruti Suzuki already has factory fitted CNG option of Maruti Wagon R and also a Duel Fuel LPG-Petrol variant of Maruti Wagon R in the market. As per a recent report by one of our fellow blogs MotorBeam, Maruti Suzuki India may launch a diesel version of Maruti Wagon R in India. Maruti Wagon R Diesel makes a lot of sense as the CNG and LPG is available in only a few metro cities in India while Maruti Suzuki has a deep reach in the semi-urban as well rural landscape of Indian market along with the urban and metro cities. The Wagon R Diesel may be powered by a striped down multi-jet diesel engine of close 1 litre displacement which will be close to the engine which Chevy Beat Diesel runs on.
We don’t have an official word on when and in what specifications the Wagon R Diesel will make its way to India, but if it has to happen, this is a good time for Maruti to start working on it and launch it in a year as this time is ripe to tap in the buyers inclination for a Diesel car. Another reason why Wagon R Diesel makes sense is that Wagon R is priced quite competitively with a starting price of below Rs. 3.5 lakhs, so even if the cost goes up by Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 80,000 for a diesel variant, it will still be an attractive price tag for an already successful and reliable car.
