With the current onslaught of products in the small car segment by many international car brands, Maruti Suzuki’s long standing dominance in this market segment is at stake. In efforts to continue with the market dominance, the company has chalked up its future plans ahead with a slew of product launches to take on the competition. The product onslaught from Maruti includes an updated 2013 Maruti Wagon R, an new SX4 based compact Crossover, refreshed Swift and a brand new 800cc engine powered diesel small car. First up of these is the Wagon R, due to be unveiled in a couple of days. The updated Wagon R is expected to merely be a cosmetic job with some added styling to the front and back and extra features in the interior.
Next up probably will be refreshed SX4 sedan which has been caught testing on the Indian roads quite many times. From the spy shots, it is clear that not much is going to be changed in the upcoming model. The exterior looks pretty much the same with some miniscule changes to the front grille and bumper.
The crossover model of the SX4 is sold in the global market but Maruti didn’t bring the same to India. However, witnessing the slump in sales of the SX4 sedan and heavy demand for SUVs, the company is planning on bringing the SX4 Crossover to India sometime in 2014. Suzuki is also in the process of developing a 800cc displacement diesel engine that will power its new small car that will be launched in end-2013 or early 2014. Further details about the model are still very scarce.
A facelifted A-Star is also in the pipeline which will take inspiration from the China-spec model. Recently, the Chinese A-Star got a facelift and the same car is expected to be headed to India sometime in 2013. Apart from this, a new 5 door model based on the A-Star platform is also in the works. It is expected to be rolled out just before Diwali and will offer the same petrol and diesel variants as available in the current A-star, say sources.
