Both the 2018 Swift and the Tiago are designed to attract young buyers. Both the cars come with a perfect blend of a sporty design while at the same time having a timid premium appeal. That said, the 2018 Swift being a new entrant looks a tad bit modern in comparison to the now familiar looks of the Tiago. The front profile of the Swift portrays a slightly aggressive look, thanks to the large hexagonal grille and sweptback headlamps. On the other hand, the Tata Tiago’s humanity line grille lends the car a slight smirky stance.

Where the Swift has an upper hand over the Tiago is its expansive feature list. It comes with projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights and LED tail-lamps, giving the hatchback a slight up-market appeal. Also, the floating roof design, curtsey the blacked out pillars along with the C-pillar mounted door handle, gives the Swift its own unique character.

Just like the exteriors, the interior design of both the cars offers modern elements. The colour scheme is primarily black with contrasting silver accents. Both the cars come with three-spoke steering wheels with mounted controls for audio and Bluetooth telephony. The new Swift’s steering wheel, however, gets a flat-bottom design. In terms of the dashboard layout, the new Swift features slightly premium design. Not only this, the material quality of the plastics is a tad better in the Swift than the one used in the Tiago. Overall, the Swift feels better made than the Tata hatchback. Both the cars can seat 4 people with ease. Fitting in a third person at the rear would be a squeeze in both the cars.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift Vs Tata Tiago- Engine Specification Comparison
The 2018 Swift is offered in both petrol and diesel guises. The petrol derivative comes with a 1.2-litre, K Series VVT engine. This engine produces 81.80 BHP along with 113 NM of peak torque. The diesel derivative comes with the 1.3-litre, DDiS motor. This oil-burner is good for 74 BHP along with 190 NM of peak torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is a standard across the range. Not only this, both the derivatives are also offered with Maruti’s 5-speed AGS unit.

The Tata Tiago too comes in both petrol and diesel guises. The petrol derivative of this compact hatchback gets a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Revotron engine. This motor produces 84 BHP along with 114 NM of peak torque. The diesel derivative of the Tiago gets a 1.05-litre, 3-cylinder Revotorq engine. It produces 69 BHP along with 140 NM of peak torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard. Just like the Swift, the Tiago comes with a 5-speed AMT unit with both petrol and diesel derivatives.

The petrol derivative of the Swift offers a mileage of 22 km/l. The diesel, on the other hand, offers a mileage of 28.4 km/l. The petrol derivative of the Tata Tiago offers a mileage of 23.84 km/l. The diesel derivative of the Tiago offers a mileage of 27.28 km/l. All these figures are ARAI certified. Rear world driving will result in slightly lower numbers.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift Vs Tata Tiago- Dimension Comparison
The new Swift has grown in proportions as compared to the outgoing model. Dimensionally, now it measures 3840 mm in length, 1735 mm in width and 1530 mm in height. The Swift sports a wheelbase of 2450 mm with the boot space standing at 268-litres.
The Tata Tiago is no less in terms of space. It measures 3736 mm in length, 1647 mm in width and 1535 mm in height. The wheelbase of this compact hatchback clocks at 2400 mm. The boot space capacity is 242-litres, a tad less than the Swift.

The 2018 Swift comes with a bundle of features. On the exterior front, it comes with projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, alloy wheels, LED tail-lamps among the others. The cabin gets a touchscreen infotainment system (Smartplay), key-less entry and push-button start/stop.
The Tata Tiago does not offer projector headlamps, neither it gets LED daytime running lights. However, it comes with stylish alloy wheels along with a small roof-mounted spoiler at the back. The cabin of the Tata Tiago gets a standard infotainment system and an automatic climate control. Tiago’s biggest plus point is that it comes with a HARMON KARDON sound system which offers superior sound quality, better than any car in its segment.

In our opinion, if you want a sufficiently loaded car and are willing to spend up to INR 8 lakhs for the top-end variant, the Swift is the right option for you. On the other hand, if your budget is slightly lower and you still want a decently equipped compact hatchback, look no further than the Tata Tiago.
