With growing demand for the Jimny worldwide, Maruti Suzuki will soon begin production of the Jimny at the company’s plant in Gujarat. This move will eventually give Maruti Suzuki the ability to launch the Jimny at a sub-Rs 10 lakh price point in India.
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny caught some great attention at the 2020 Auto Expo, and since then, there has been quite some anticipation about this little 4×4 in India. In fact, there have been various reports which have been suggesting that the Jimny will be launched in India. Yes, the reports are true and the Jimny will indeed be launched in India in 2021. But there’s another big update regarding the Jimny and that is the SUV could even be manufactured here in India.
Maruti Suzuki is actually planning to commence production of the Jimny in India at its Sanand facility in Gujarat. When the Jimny is produced here in India, it will also be exported to other developing countries such as Brazil. Maruti Suzuki’s Gurgaon facility is already running at full capacity while the Sanand facility has enough room to establish another assembly line for the Jimny.
The Jimny is a hugely popular product internationally and there’s growing demand for the product overseas. Suzuki manufactures the Jimny at the company’s plant in Kosai, Japan, among other models. The plant is Kosai is already being utilized to full capacity but to keep up with the Jimny’s growing demand, Suzuki is setting up a new assembly line for the Jimny at its plant in Sanand, Gujarat.
International demand has presented India with an unique opportunity. A large part of the production will of course go for exports and that is what will give Maruti Suzuki the economies of scale needed to make the Jimny viable for production in India. Six months after exports commence, the small 4×4 will be introduced in our market at a sub-Rs 10 lakh price tag and will be retailed via Maruti Suzuki’s premium Nexa retail chain.

The Jimny sold abroad is powered by the familiar 1.5-litre K15b petrol engine. The motor puts out 102PS of power and 130Nm of peak torque. through a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. Its a real off-roader as its built on an old-school ladder frame chassis with 3-link axle and coil spring suspension, and part-time 4WD with low-range transfer gear. This little SUV has as much as 210mm of ground clearance and it also gets other impressive kit such as brake LSD traction control, hill hold, and hill descent control.

The compact dimensions and light weight characteristics from the original Jimny have also been retained with this forth-generation model. In terms of design, the Jimny has cute proportions and the simple boxy looks still work very well. Internationally, the Jimny comes fairly well equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, digital driver information display, cruise control, automatic climate control, and six airbags. At a sub-10 lakh price-point, the only other direct rival for the Maruti Suzuki Jimny in India would be the 2020 Mahindra Thar.
