With the diesel variants of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga gone, the MPV will only be available with a 1.5L petrol or CNG engine. However, there are possibilities of the Ertiga diesel to make a comeback in the BS6 era.
Maruti Suzuki discontinues the Ertiga diesel in India ahead of the March 31 BS6 emission nomrs deadline. The manufacturer has dropped the diesel variant of the Ertiga from their official website and this news comes at a time when Maruti Suzuki just announced that they cleared their entire BS4 inventory ahead of the SB6 deadline. The Ertiga is the second diesel car to be dropped from Maruti Suzuki’s lineup after the Ciaz due to the BS6 norms.
The diesel variant of the Ertiga was powered by a 1.5-litre DDiS diesel engine that was developed by Maruti Suzuki in-house. The engine produced 95bhp and 225Nm of peak torque and came mated only to a 6-speed manual transmission. This same engine was also offered on the Ciaz and it was quite refined and revv happy, in spite of being a diesel engine.
Maruti Suzuki has however mentioned several times that they will bring back their diesel engines should their be sufficient demand in the market. On that note, the Ertiga diesel could possibly make a comeback in the BS6 era as there are reports that Maruti Suzuki could launch their first BS6-diesel car in 2021. Moreover, a BS6 compliant diesel Ertiga has even been spotted testing in India on an earlier occassion.

With the diesel engine gone, the Ertiga will now be available with two engine options only – a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre CNG option – and both of them are already BS6 compliant. The petrol engine develops 105bhp and 138Nm of peak torque while the CNG variant develops a healthy 92bhp and 122Nm of peak torque. As standard, the Ertiga is offered with a 5-speed manual while the 4-speed torque converter is limited to the petrol variants.

Maruti Suzuki also offers their 12V mild-hybrid system on the petrol variants of the Ertiga. With the mild-hybrid system, the car additionally gets torque assist and start stop functionality. The Ertiga is priced from Rs 7.59 lakh to Rs 10.13 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It will lock horns with the upcoming Mahindra Marazzo petrol.
