Maruti Suzuki, in cooperation, have been ruling the Indian automobile market for over two decades and in spite of being called as truly Indian, a majority of the company’s stakes are with Japanese major Suzuki. The other half Maruti has been working on strengthening its Research & Development activities and the latest buzz says that the same is planning to introduce a global small car by the year 2017.
Though most of the tasks concerned with the new car will be undertaken by Maruti but a little bit of assistance will be delivered by parent Suzuki Motor Corp (SMC) also.
Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Managing Executive Officer (R&D) I V Rao recently said, “Our ultimate aim is to develop a car for the global market. With our new R&D center at Rohtak getting ready, we will start working on a global car,”
Asking about the timeline for the introduction of the small car majorly designed by Indian engineers, he said, “It is difficult to share any specific time, but we are keeping a target of 2017.” He added, “It is a totally new model, but will be developed on an existing platform.”
The company is already working on a replacement of Maruti 800 which is likely to be launched in the coming year. It has also investing nearly 1500 crore on a new R& D center in Rohtak, the first significant facility outside japan. At present Maruti relies on Suzuki for the design of most of its new models but with the new center coming up, the same is expected to become self-reliant.
