The Alto 800 CC small car was launched in India in the year 2000 and for past 7 years, Alto has been the highest selling car in Indian and highest selling car in the world for last two years. Maruti Alto crossed 10 Lakh (one million) units in 8 years and 3 months which is the fastest for that time and it broke its own record by selling another 10 lakh units in just 3 years and 6 months.
In the year 2010, Maruti launched a more powerful variant of the Alto called the Maruti Alto K10 which is also selling along with the Maruti Alto 800 CC models. This is the second car from Maruti Suzuki to sell over 2 million units with the first one being Maruti 800 which is a legend of its own time. In the year 2010-11 and 2011-12, Maruti Suzuki sold over 3 lakh Maruti Alto cars each year which is a record number of sale for any car in the Indian history.
Some of the traits which help Maruti Alto become such a big success is its high fuel economy, low maintenance cost, high reliability, low cost of ownership and sleek design. Apart from this, the Alto delivers good handling and performance in its segment and is one of the cheapest cars in India in terms of total cost of ownership. With Alto, Maruti Suzuki hit the correct checkpoints in the Indian car buyer’s checklist and made it a phenomenal successor of the legendary Maruti 800. Later in 2012, Maruti Suzuki will come up with a replacement of the Maruti Alto 800 CC car while the Alto K10 will remain on sale.
