The compact hatchback will get lighter as a part of Suzuki’s strategy for the next 10 years to make their cars more efficient.

Maruti Alto is slated to receive weight correction in the coming years to boost efficiency and mileage. This initiative by the Japanese auto giant aims to include recyclability into the overall operations to achieve carbon neutrality. We know how critical the carbon issue has become in the world. While this is true for most industrial operations today, we just concern ourselves with the automobile industry. That is the sole reason for the inception of electric cars. Legacy carmakers have announced ambitious plans to achieve carbon neutrality in the coming years. The details of this post stem from a Money Control report.

Maruti Alto To Get Weight Reduction

The main talking point about this report is that Suzuki Motor will reduce the weight of the Alto by 15% over the next decade. At present, it weighs around 680 kg. This measure aims to reduce the energy usage by the car which, in turn, will boost mileage even further. Maruti Suzuki highlighted the statement by Suzuki Motor which mentioned that the company will focus on energy efficiency and recyclability of batteries to achieve carbon neutrality. As per the calculation, a 200 kg reduction in vehicle weight can bring down the energy consumption by 20% at the manufacturing stage and 6% when in use. In this manner, energy consumption will be reduced from manufacturing to recycling.

Apart from that, the smaller motors and batteries will also allow Suzuki to offer new cars at lower price points. In addition, the recently launched Z12E engine (which powers the fourth-generation Swift) will also be offered across multiple models throughout the world to minimize energy consumption. In the Swift, it boasts an incredible mileage figure of 24.8 km/l with the manual and 25.75 km/l with the automatic transmission. Even in this case, the weight of the latest-gen Swift is less than the outgoing model. Hence, this is clearly a strategy Suzuki is already adopting and implementing to make their vehicles more fuel-efficient.

Our View

Reducing the weight of the car is a direct way to improve the mileage and overall efficiency. I can only hope that it doesn’t come at the cost of compromising the build quality and safety prowess. As we advance, car companies often use lightweight materials to keep the weight of cars low. Moreover, the inclusion of ADAS active safety features in lower-segment vehicles is also a key aspect of making modern cars much safer. Going forward, it is possible that the active and passive safety features will cover even entry-level cars. Let us keep an eye out for more developments in this regard.
