Ever since the arrival of Maruti Jimny in the Indian market, comparisons with the Mahindra Thar are warranted.
Maruti Jimny rescues Mahindra Thar during an off-roading excursion. Jimny is the latest entrant into the lifestyle off-roading category in our market. It is the 4th-gen model which has been a prominent product in the international markets for ages. In fact, India got the taste of this SUV in its 2nd-gen version which was called the Gypsy. It became a legend in our market. Maruti has launched the Jimny in the 5-door guise for the very first time. On the other hand, the legendary Mahindra Thar has been the go-to product for thrill-seekers in India since time immemorial. It is interesting to watch these two giants go head-to-head in their natural habitat. Here are the details.

Maruti Jimny Rescues Mahindra Thar
The video has been uploaded by BRH Expeditions on YouTube. It captures detailed off-roading activities using these two prominent SUVs. During the course of this expedition, there are varied terrains and surfaces which test the capabilities of these SUVs thoroughly. This includes muddy surfaces, steep inclines and descents, uneven surfaces to test ground clearance and wheel articulation and more. Since this is not a specifically curated field, the obstacles are quite challenging.

Nevertheless, both SUVs fare impressively well in almost all these hurdles. They are able to conquer challenges quite confidently. However, there comes a point in the video where the Thar tries to overcome a steep slope multiple times. But it kept getting bottomed out. As a result, all four wheels lost traction and the SUV gets stuck. That is when Jimny comes to the rescue. The team tied the rear end of the Thar to the front end of the Jimny and the latter pulled the Thar backwards where its tyres got traction. All in all, both SUVs demonstrated just how capable they are off-tarmac.

What We Think
These two SUVs are, undoubtedly, the most capable products at this price point when it comes to off-roading. That is the reason why the off-roading community thinks so highly of the Thar. But Jimny has come at a time when people were quite frustrated with the lack of practicality in the 3-door Thar. In fact, that is the reason why Mahindra is also testing the 5-door iteration of the Thar that might launch soon. But the 5-door Jimny promises to be practical and off-road-ready. It will be interesting to see if Jimny will be able to put a dent in the sales of the Thar or will the two happily co-exist.
