Maruti Gypsy discontinued a while back but now it is back again; the production has started exclusively for the Indian army as they have ordered more than 3000 units.
Maruti Suzuki will start the production of the iconic Gypsy once again after it was stopped after 33 years. However, it will make a comeback only for the Indian Army and currently, the military has ordered 3,051 units for the same.
Maruti Gypsy Production phased out due to changing emission and safety norms which made the old-school car difficult to upgrade and it would be unsafe for the buyers too. However, Indian Army has received a waiver from Ministry of Defence, so that Maruti Suzuki could start the production.
Launched back in 1985, Maruti Gypsy was known for making way through narrow roads and to conquer rough terrains. It came with a 1.3-litre petrol engine which generated 84 bhp at 6000 rpm and 103 Nm of healthy torque at 4500 rpm. The ARAI certified mileage was 11 kmpl. The prices started at Rs 6.15 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Powered by only a petrol engine, the off-roader Gypsy lost to the comfortable diesel SUV’s available in the market. The buyers started shifting towards more conventional cars and even the Indian Army shifted its focus to Tata Safari. Earlier, proper testing of the Safari had been done in rough patches and thereafter the SUV proved its worth, an order of 3,192 units was placed.
Maruti Gypsy is ruggedly built and offers the joy of SUV with being an ease in your pocket. The SUV came with four-wheel drive as standard and a low range gearbox. It carried leaf spring suspension with double action damper and booster but boy it was pain while riding in the Gypsy with those suspensions.
Maruti Gypsy production has started again on the orders of Indian Army but the vehicle won’t be updated. It will lack the new BS-VI compliance engine and the updated safety norms.

Maruti Gypsy is ruggedly used by the Indian Army in the northeast region and rough terrains of the Kashmir. The Safari which has been chosen by the Indian Army is large and comfortable but the Gypsy navigates you through the narrow roads. It comes with a soft top which allows the Army to mount rifles and recoilless guns on it.
