For the month of September 2023, the largest carmaker in the country was able to sell 11,736 units of the Grand Vitara. This is almost similar to how many units of the SUV were sold in August 2023. This table gives us a clear indication of what is happening in this segment. The market share of the top 3 mid-size SUVs is just unbelievable. It is also interesting to see the new Honda Elevate perform so well. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is Toyota’s badge-engineered version of the Maruti Grand Vitara. Then we have the VW-Skoda cousins in the form of Taigun and Kushaq. Finally, the MG Astor has not been able to sell as well as the company would’ve wanted. In any case, one could clearly see people’s inclination and affinity toward Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Kia.

What We Think
The mid-size SUV segment is among the fastest-growing categories in the Indian automobile market. That is the reason why every carmaker wants to be a part of it. In fact, Citroen has also recently entered this segment with the C3 Aircross. Hence, every carmaker needs to bring its A-game if they wish to compete with the Koreans. However, this makes things interesting for the buyers. They get to choose between a vast variety of automobiles. There might even be mid-size SUVs from Mahindra and Tata Motors in the next few months.
