Maruti Suzuki might be late to the party but it will eventually launch its first electric SUV in India in the next couple of years.
Maruti showcased its EVX electric SUV at the Auto Expo 2023 in New Delhi and the production-intended model has been spotted testing. The largest carmaker in the country has not jumped onto the EV bandwagon just yet. It says that without the intended volumes, it does make a great business case for the largest carmaker in the country just yet. However, it will eventually commence manufacturing electric cars which is where the EVX comes into the picture. The global debut is expected sometime next year while the market launch might happen in 2025. Let us check out the details of the test mule.

Maruti EVX Spotted Testing
As per the information in the report, these spyshots have been taken from a charging station in Krakow, Poland. As seen in the images, the exterior of the EV is completely camouflaged. Nevertheless, we can see the projector headlamp setup at the front which seems to follow the traditional approach of placing them on the bonnet rather than the bumper, sporty bumper, relatively understated alloy wheels and strip running across the grille area. Additionally, there is a prominent side body cladding, tapering roofline, full-width LED strip, the rear door handles on the C-pillars, shark fin antenna, roof-mounted spoiler and more. Apart from that, there is a two-spoke steering wheel with a rotary dial on the centre console.

Specs
While there is no official word out yet, the EVX is expected to pack in a 60 kWh battery pack that could power a single- or a dual-motor setup for a 2WD and AWD configuration respectively. This could generate peak power in the range of 138 – 170 hp. More importantly, the range could be around 550 km. Also, the dimensions are expected to be in the vicinity of 4,300 mm (length), 1,800 mm (width) and 1,600 mm (height) with the segment-best wheelbase. However, we will need to wait a bit longer to get the official confirmation on these figures.

What We Think
Maruti Suzuki might not have the first mover’s advantage, but it will make sure that it learns from the other carmakers in terms of what the customers want and what they are struggling with. That is called the last-mover’s advantage. It has the opportunity to not commit the same mistake that others might have done. Since the market trend is leaning toward SUVs, it makes sense to develop an electric SUV as the first product in the eco-friendly space. Apart from that, offering the EV with the latest features, high range and affordable prices are the key to having a successful EV.
