Maruti Suzuki India launched Maruti Ertiga MPV or as they call it, LUV – Lifestyle Utility Vehicle in India on 12 April 2012. Within a few months of launch, Ertiga is one of the top selling MPVs in India and has brought over 32,000 booking in one month of its launch. When Maruti launched Ertiga in India, it also started export of Ertiga CKD units to Indonesia where it was locally assembled from the CKD kit and launched there too in the petrol variants only. In just a couple of months, Maruti Ertiga waiting period has risen to as much as 9 months for some models. There are two key reasons for high waiting period – high demand and shortage of alloy wheels for top end models. This is a clear indication that the demand for the Ertiga is much higher than the pre-launch estimates of Maruti Suzuki India which is both good and bad if you looks at it from different perspectives.
When Suzuki launched Ertiga in Indonesia, it did not expect such high demand there as well, but in real, the Suzuki car dealers in Indonesia are complaining about not getting enough Ertiga MPVs to meet the customer demands. While there were no precise numbers revealed about the demand for the Ertiga, but the allocated quote with the Indonesia dealers is sold out and they have requested Suzuki to increase the production so that they can meet the demand of the customers. Ertiga is gathered over 10,000 bookings in Indonesia post its launch there which is a clear indication that the Indonesia car buyers are also excited about this car just like Indian car buyers are.

Ertiga is designed on an extended Swift platform which is one of the key reasons behind the pleasing driving dynamics of this car. It just handles like a hatchback and the driver does not feel like he/she is driving a large car. The size is also smaller than most of the typical MPVs which does make it a little less spacious, but intelligent packaging and thoughtful interiors make it overcome the challenge. It will be interesting to see how Maruti Suzuki will make changes to its production capacity to fine tune the output to meet the demand and keep the waiting period low for both Indian and Indonesian customers.
