In an impressive digital rendering, the Maruti Ertiga EV concept comes to life. Maruti Suzuki wanted to enter the EV market long ago with the WagonR EV. In fact, the prototype was spotted testing in 2018. It was showcased at the MOVE Mobility Summit in 2018. The original plan was to price it at an attractive Rs 10 lakh range and offer a range of around 130 km. As a matter of fact, Maruti had built 50 prototypes of the WagonR EV in its Gurgaon plant. However, the plans for the launch were eventually shelved. As a result, the eVX electric SUV will be its first EV now, which it will develop with Toyota.

In addition, there are large LED DRLs in a unique shape that surround the area which would typically house fog lamps. Apart from that, there is a unique grille which looks illuminated. The side profile features flush-fitting door handles, roof rails, chrome window frames and black windows. The wheel arches are quite pronounced for an MPV. All in all, it looks pretty modern.

First EV from Maruti Suzuki
As mentioned previously, the largest carmaker in the country axed the plans to launch the electric version of the WagonR which could have spawned something like an electric Ertiga too. Now, it will utilize its collaboration with Toyota to manufacture the first EV called the eVX. It was showcased at Auto Expo 2023 in Delhi. It will be based on Toyota’s 27PL skateboard platform. The mid-size electric SUV will have a modern interior and acres of space owing to its born-electric credentials. The global debut might take place sometime in 2024 and the production model could make it to the markets by 2025.

Author’s Note
There have been reports floating around on the internet suggesting that an electric version of the Kia Carens might also be on the cards. Currently, there is no electric MPV on sale in India. Had Maruti been able to develop something like this Ertiga EV, it would’ve had the first-mover advantage. Even if it had been a conversion of the existing ICE counterpart, the costs would have been quite attractive. That is the attraction of Maruti cars in our market in general. People get a sense of trust and assurance about the availability of a touchpoint in their vicinity regardless of where they find themselves.
