Maruti Suzuki is leveraging its CNG powertrain to grab as massive a chunk of the market share as possible and it has been able to successfully achieve that.
Here is the comparison between Maruti Ertiga CNG and XL6 CNG in their base versions. Maruti has introduced a CNG alternative for almost all of its popular cars. Already being the largest carmaker in the country, it has been able to grab a large chunk of the CNG market in the country all to itself. The Ertiga and XL6 and the only 7 and 6-seater MPVs respectively, in the country with the option of CNG. The base versions of these are priced at just over Rs 2 lakh apart (on-road price). We take a look at which one makes sense for you.

Maruti Ertiga CNG vs XL6 CNG – Specs
Since these are essentially the same cars, they carry similar powertrains as well. There is a 1.5-litre K15C engine that makes 87 hp and 121.5 Nm of peak power and torque in the CNG version. The CNG tank capacity is 60 litres and the mileage for the Ertiga is rated at 26.11 km/kg. With a similar powertrain, the XL6 is able to deliver a slightly higher 26.32 km/kg.

Exterior and Design Comparison
On the outside, the XL6 certainly looks more premium. It comes with LED headlamps, LED fog lamps, a massive chrome slab on the grille, chunky wheel arches, 16-inch alloy wheels, chrome door handles with request sensors on both front doors, metallic roof rails, LED taillamps, shark fin antenna, rear washer and wiper, and defogger among other things.

On the other hand, the Ertiga CNG in this trim doesn’t offer fog lamps, there are 15-inch steel wheels, no roof rails, there are projector headlamps, no request sensors on the doors, no wheel arches, no rear wiper, washer or defogger, and comes with a regular antenna. It is the XL6 that has a clear edge.

Interior and Features
Sitting inside the XL6 definitely feels more premium with height adjustable seats, steering mounted controls, a more attractive dashboard, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a central armrest, soft-touch door panels, tilt and telescopic steering, sunglass holder, captain seats in the middle row, 6-speaker audio system, cruise control, part-digital instrument cluster, and more. In the Ertiga, you will get a rather basic interior layout, no touchscreen infotainment, fabric upholstery, a similar driver’s instrument cluster, no central armrest, hard plastics on the door panels, and no sunglass holder.

Verdict
While both these MPVs have similar powertrains, there are distinct differences in the cabin layout, exterior styling and features. Hence, if you are willing to spend Rs 2 lakh to get a better quality product that looks great, has the necessary modern features and boasts a slightly higher mileage, the XL6 makes sense. However, if you just want the MPV for low running costs and are not looking to save Rs 2 lakh, Ertiga CNG does the trick just fine.
