The Maruti Brezza becomes India’s top-selling SUV in 2023. It belongs to the compact SUV segment in our market. It is one of the most crowded spaces in our country. Almost all major car marques have their products in this domain. That is what makes this feat even more remarkable. However, we are used to such incredible achievements in terms of car sales from the largest carmaker in the country. However, the Tata Nexon is giving the Brezza a tough fight by selling almost the same number of units in 2023. That is quite impressive too.

As per the latest data, in the year 2023, Maruti Suzuki was able to sell 1,70,588 units of the Brezza compact SUV. This makes it the highest-selling SUV in India. However, the Indian carmaker (Tata Motors) sold an almost identical 1,70,311 units of the Nexon. Note that the Nexon received a thorough facelift with striking aesthetic modifications and a revamped interior and features list recently. It is clear that these two SUVs have been ruling the charts in this space. The overall highest-selling car in 2023 was the mighty and familiar Maruti Swift which sold 2,03,469 units. In total, the Indian automobile market sold 41,00,258 (4.1 million) units in the entire year which is a record in itself.

For reference, the only other compact SUV on the list of the top 10 highest-selling cars in India in 2023 is the Hyundai Venue. The Korean auto giant sold a decent 1,29,278 units of the Venue. Note that even the Venue is updated in its current iteration. It is evident that the accessibility and road presence offered by compact SUVs are really enticing new buyers to go for these products without having to shell out exorbitant money on large SUVs. These compact urban SUVs seem to be the flavour of the market at the moment.

Author’s Note
The present demand in the automotive market is notable, signalling a recovery for the industry after years of slump caused by the pandemic and subsequent challenges in the supply chain, particularly the semiconductor chip shortage. The robust performance during the festive season served as a clear indicator of this positive trend, which is further substantiated by the sustained sales momentum. As carmakers get busy with their plans for the new year 2024, we expect this flow of sales and demand to continue. Note that with time, even EVs will be joining the sales charts in meaningful numbers.
