The car sales report for June 2021 for the premium hatchback segment suggests Baleno outselling Altroz and i20 put together. The automobile industry seems to have recovered from the lockdown caused due to the pandemic in May, where the country was completely shut down. The sales report for June indicates a recovering trend with companies launching new models and fulfilling the pent-up demand. In the premium hatchback segment, the results are obvious in the sense that the Baleno leads the segment but shocking in terms of Tata Altroz beating the Hyundai i20 for the second spot. Overall, Maruti Baleno sold more than double the Altroz and i20 combined. Let us take a look in detail at the individual sales.

Maruti Baleno Sales vs Rivals – June 2021 Sales
Maruti Baleno, the long-standing segment leader continues to impress with 14,701 units sold in India in June 2021 compared to 4,300 units in the same month last year. This is a massive figure and no other product is anywhere near the Baleno.
Tata Altroz – 6,350 Units (-8,351)
The safest hatchback in India with a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating, Tata Altroz keeps beating the i20 in monthly sales regularly now due to a ton of features and powertrain options. Tata launched the Dark Edition of the Altroz recently as well. In June 2021, Tata sold 6,350 units of the Altroz compared to 3,104 units in June last year.

Hyundai i20 – 6,333 Units (-8,368)
Hyundai sold 6,333 units of the i20 in June compared to about 2,700 units in June 2020. It has seen a decline in sales of the i20 after the launch of its current-gen version due to the high asking price.
Toyota Glanza – 2,586 Units (-12,115)
The badge-engineered Baleno also brings in a ton of sales for Toyota in India. In June 2021, Toyota sold 2,586 units of the Glanza in our market compared to 914 units in June 2020.

VW Polo – 1,303 Units (-13,398)
The German premium hatchback was sold 1,303 times last month compared to 1,228 units in the same month last year. A generation update of the Polo had been revealed in the international market. There are speculations that VW might bring it to India as well.
Ford Freestyle – 413 Units (-14,288)
Ford Freestyle is also not too popular among the buyers and was sold 413 times in June 2021. In comparison, Ford sold 506 units of the Freestyle in the same month last year. It is the only car to witness the decline in sales on a year-on-year basis in this segment.

Honda Jazz – 243 Units (-14,458)
Honda Jazz is also, unfortunately, becoming less and less popular in the segment. This is confirmed by the 243 units it sold last month compared to zero sales in the same month last year. This is the hatchback car sales report for June 2021 signifying the trend that the cars in this segment are following.
