A couple of days back, Maruti Suzuki launched the Baleno with a new 1.2 Litre mild-hybrid engine, that is BS-6 compliant. The petrol variant is now priced starting from Rs 7.25 Lakhs.
Baleno uses the old 1.3 Litre DDiS diesel engine, that delivers 75 BHP and 190 Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The RS variant uses the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit, that pumps out 101 BHP and 150 Nm.
The new petrol engine is a 1.2 Litre DUALJET VVT engine, paired with Suzuki’s mild-hybrid system. It is available with the existing 1.2 Litre petrol unit.
Reportedly, Maruti might discontinue the diesel engines on smaller cars. As the BS6 norms are kicking, it will be difficult to upgrade the existing Fiat-sourced diesel engine.

The claimed mileage of Maruti Baleno stands at 27 kmpl for the diesel variant. The new engine will deliver nearly 22 kmpl. It is still one of the most fuel efficient hatchbacks in its segment.
Other than the price hike, there are no changes onboard. It continues to rival with the likes of Hyundai i20 and Honda Jazz. It will also compete with the upcoming Tata Altroz.
