We have witnessed some really wacky modifications but who would have ever imagined putting tractor tyres on a humble Maruti 800?
Even though the Maruti 800 has been discontinued for almost a decade now, it’s still in use in many Tier-II and Tier-III towns. The entry-level hatchback won many hearts with its affordable pricing, simple mechanicals, peppy performance and low maintenance. It has also proven to be sufficiently rugged and that makes it a choice of many in the hilly areas. It’s not too tough to still find some well maintained examples, though the influx of more modern cars has surely made the 800 look too dated. Still, though, even today, many choose to modify their 800s to make them a bit more appealing. However, having massive tractor tyres on a rather piddly hatchback is certainly taking things a bit too far, right?

The video we have here shows this modified Maruti 800 but doesn’t give too many details of the modification. However, we can still spot the car sporting customer spacers in order to accommodate those massive tyres. Frankly, we’re not sure why would anyone want to slap on a set of tractor wheels and tyres on a small hatchback but, well, it does make for an interesting experiment. IN all probability, these wheels measure 28-inch in diameter, a massive upgrade from the 11-inch units present on a stock 800. One can see the small car driving around with the unusual footwear at a rather slow pace but driving this contraption on a public road is surely not recommended. Not only will managing the wider-than-usual track be quite a task but we simply can’t imagine this car taking sharp corners.
It is surely not uncommon for car owners to upsize their wheels and tyres in interest of better handling and a bolder stance but upsizing should be done only within the recommended limits. Putting XL-size tyres can cause permanent damage to the suspension, along with also having a detrimental effect on the fuel efficiency, performance and brakes. Of course, having tractor tyres is simply taking things to extreme and the mechanicals would wear and tear a lot faster. While the 800 is a bare-basic, no-frills car devoid of modern safety features, having tractor tyres on modern cars will surely impact the performance of ABS.

All carmakers spend huge amounts on the R&D for their vehicles and the wheel and tyre spec is chosen after careful calculations. Disturbing any one of the many parameters has a direct or indirect effect on others and merely upsizing the wheel and tyres by a level or two is enough to cause a change to the overall performance. Putting tractor tyres on a Maruti 800 or, for that matter, on any passenger car irrespective of its size, is simply a bit too much.
