India is full of unbelievable incidents particularly related to automobiles and this is the latest example to drive that point home
In a rather interesting turn of events, a man buries his Maruti WagonR after owning it for 18 long years. Before you jump to any conclusions, I must mention that it was a sign of the utmost respect by the owner. Concluding that the hatchback has reached its end, Sanjay Polra (owner) decided to commemorate the vehicle by performing its ‘last rituals’ since the car bought him and his family immense prosperity. Just to give you an idea, having started with the WagonR back in 2006, Sanjay now owns an Audi.
Man Buries His Maruti WagonR
This news has been going viral online. This case stems from the Padarshinga village Lathi taluka in the Amreli district of Gujarat. To bury the car, a 15-feet deep grave was dug, the vehicle was decorated extensively with flowers and garlands and the owner even invited around 1,500 villagers along with priests and religious leaders for this grand event. If that was not enough, the villagers performed a Garba dance around the car at the samadhi spot and a tree was also planted at this location. Sanjay mentioned that they treated the car as a family member and it changed his fortunes.
In 2006, when he bought the car, he was working as a property broker in Surat. He migrated there from Saurashtra in search of better opportunities. Today, he has become a builder and owns an Audi car. He credits a part of this success to his first car. Hence, a 4-page invite was sent to the villagers to attend the last rites of the Maruti WagonR. It contained pictures of the car over the years along with the title “Mangal Avasar” (auspicious occasion). He wants to create an everlasting memory of the car with this event. This has to be one of the most bizarre events I have ever come across.
My View
I must admit this is the first such instance I have covered. As strange as it might sound, I can, sort of, understand the emotions people have with their cars. Indians are sensitive about their vehicles, especially the first car. They develop a strong bond and their sentiments are attached to it. Obviously, some people take it too far. This is a perfect case in point. In any case, I shall keep an eye out for more such cases in times to come.
