Mahindra Thar 5-door has been undergoing thorough testing on various terrains in India for months now.
Reports are coming out indicating that the upcoming Thar 5-door will be the third product from Mahindra to have ADAS. The first two being the XUV700 and the soon-to-be-launched XUV 3XO. That is a huge update for the iconic off-roader. Mahindra has announced that the larger Thar will launch in India on August 15, 2024, India’s Independence Day. This is a day when Mahindra often launches new cars or showcases its vision for the future. For now, let us stick to the details of the more practical avatar of the Thar.

Mahindra Thar 5-Door with ADAS
The upcoming 5-door Thar will become only the third model in Mahindra’s India lineup to offer ADAS. More details are not available to tell us if this will be a Level 1 or Level 2 ADAS. In any case, I would like to guess that it would be the latter. Hence, we could expect tons of driver assistance functions, including –
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Blind Spot Monitoring
- Lane Keep Assist
- Lane Departure Warning
- Autonomous Emergency Braking
Specs
We know that the Mahindra Thar 5-door will be based on the Scorpio N. Hence, it will share the chassis, off-roading hardware and powertrains. I believe that the 5-door Thar will have the option of choosing between either a 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol engine or a 2.2-litre mHawk turbo diesel engine. These will ensure a decent performance corresponding to the large size of the 5-door Thar. Apart from that, the SUV will come with either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission. Needless to say, the prime focus will be on the 4×4 drivetrain. At the moment, the Thar ranges from Rs 11.25 lakh and Rs 17.60 lakh, ex-showroom. The 5-door iteration will command a substantial premium over these prices.

Our View
The only real issue with the existing Thar is its lack of boot space. Also, the legroom for the rear passenger might seem slightly cramped to some. However, the 5-door Thar will be significantly longer which will translate to a longer wheelbase. That added space will go into the cabin and boot compartment. Hence, people will be able to take their family along for long trips without having to worry about the luggage area. That will make the new Thar accessible to an even wider range of customers.
