As per a report by one of our fellow blogs, Mahindra and Mahindra might opt for using Renault’s frugal and refined K9K Diesel engine used in Nissan Micra Diesel and Renault Pulse Diesel in India in its upcoming compact MPV Mahindra Xylo Mini. The K9K is a very refined and punchy turbocharged CRDI diesel engine with amazing torque od 160 Nm delivered around 2000 RPM effortlessly without any turbo-lag. I have personally driven a Micra Diesel on a city and highway both and the engine really impressed me with the amount of torque it delivers along with its frugal 20+ KMPL mileage on a car like Micra. The same engine does the duty in the sporty Renault Pulse hatchback. Mahindra & Mahindra has not officially confirmed the same, the information has been revealed by some sources close to M&M. As of now, M&M is testing a 1.5 Litre 3 Cylinder engine based on Scorpio’s engine, but the performance of the engine is probably not up to the expectations. If Mahindra decides to use the Renault’s K9K unit in the Xylo Mini which is due around November 2012, it will have to procure a license from Renault to use its engine on its car. It will involve some royalty arrangement which M&M will pay to Renault, something like Maruti Suzuki and Fiat have for the use of Fiat Multi-jet engine in Maruti Diesel cars in India.

We will wait patiently and see how things shape up for Mahindra Xylo Mini in coming few months. As per our expectations, the Xylo Mini looks like a promising vehicle considering that it will be placed in the small car segment and will be priced quite aggressively and will challenge the only car in this segment which is the Premier Rio.
