Mahindra & Mahindra played the perfect gate-crasher by announcing its next flagship, the XUV700, on the day of the media preview of the Hyundai Alcazar. Since this announcement, the upcoming large SUV has been one of the most hotly anticipated models and from the looks of it, this wait could finally get over on this year’s independence day. Meanwhile, the home-grown carmaker has decided to whet our appetite by dropping teasers of its new car’s features. Earlier, the carmaker teased the segment-first auto-booster feature of the XUV700’s headlamps and now, in a new video, it has been revealed that the new flagship would even offer Personalised Safety Alert, a feature unheard of in this price segment!

Through this feature, the electronics will warn the driver about potential safety hazards. While this is nothing new, what’s of interest here is that these warnings will be given in the voice of the driver’s loved one. Basically, this system will allow the driver to record the voice of his dear ones, which will be used by the car to deliver safety messages. Imagine hearing your kid asking you to slow down on a road with a low-speed limit – sounds effective, right? Other than the Personalised Safety Alerts, other safety features that the Mahindra XUV700 will offer include an auto booster for the headlamp, ABS, EBD front and side airbags, ESC, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), and more.
Unlike the Mahindra XUV500, which was originally a diesel-only model and was joined by a petrol engine variant at a much later stage, the Mahindra XUV700 will offer both petrol and diesel engine options right from Day-1. The former will be a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit, while the latter will be a 2.2-litre oil-burner. These motors will be shared with the Thar, but the carmaker is expected to tweak them for their application in their new flagship. A 4×4 drivetrain will also be on offer. At a later stage, Mahindra is expected to even introduce an electric powertrain, which is something that makes the new SUV future-proof.

The Mahindra XUV700 will be a feature-packed model with an equipment list that includes Mercedes-Benz-like free-standing connected digital screens for the touchscreen infotainment unit and instrument cluster, 4G connectivity features Apple CarPlay and Android, Automatic Dual-Zone Climate Control, Multi-purpose Steering Wheel, Panoramic Sunroof, and more. It’s quite clear that the XUV700 will be a definite step up from the XUV500. Prices of the new SUV could start at roughly Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom) and go all the way to Rs 23 lakh for the top-sped model. While this would make XUV700 a more expensive proposition than the XUV500, it should help the SUV carve out a niche for itself by being the only 7-seater SUV positioned between the likes of Tata Safari and Toyota Fortuner.
