The Mahindra Thar Roxx becomes the first body-on-frame SUV to achieve a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating
Mahindra Thar Roxx has been able to score a full 5-star safety rating at the Bharat NCAP testing. Thar Roxx, if you’ve been living under a rock, is the 5-door iteration of the iconic Thar. The Indian SUV maker has differentiated it from the regular Thar by altering the platform, exterior, interior, tech and powertrains. In essence, it is almost a completely new SUV. With the added wheelbase, the room inside the cabin has been enhanced tremendously without compromising the off-roading traits. With the latest safety rating announcement, the desirability quotient of the Thar Roxx has increased even more. Let us glance at the details here.
Mahindra Thar Roxx Tested at Bharat NCAP
The Mahindra Thar Roxx has been able to achieve 31.09 points out of 32 in the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 45 points out of 49 in the Child Occupant Protection (COP) category. Both these translate to full 5 stars as per the B-NCAP protocols. Not just that, with this score, the Thar Roxx achieved the highest Bharat NCAP for any ICE SUV in the country. The off-roader was equipped with 6 airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts at the rear, seatbelt pretensioner, seatbelt load-limiter, airbag cut-off switch, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), pedestrian protection (AIS-100) and seatbelt reminder as standard. Therefore, the safety rating covers the entire variant lineup of the Mahindra Thar Roxx.
Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)
In this section, the Thar Roxx managed to score 15.09 points out of 16 in the Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier Test and 16 points out of 16 in the Side Movable Deformable Barrier Test. The Side Pole Impact Pole Test was rated ‘OK’. In these tests, the head, neck, chest, pelvis, knees and tibias of the passenger were deemed good. For the driver, the head, neck, knee and pelvis protection was also rated good. However, the chest, abdomen and tibias protection was rated adequate. All this resulted in a total of 31.09 points out of 32 with a full 5-star safety rating.
Child Occupant Protection (COP)
Similarly, the COP category includes a Dynamic Score of 24 out of 24, a CRS Installation Score of 12 out of 12 and a Vehicle Assessment Score of 9 out of 13 for a total of 45 points out of a possible 49. The ISOFIX mount for the 18-month-old child was installed rearward facing, while that of the 3-year-old child was also installed rearward facing. All this concluded in good protection for both children, cementing an impressive 5-star safety rating in this segment too.
My View
Mahindra Thar Roxx is geared towards families who love to go out on adventures together. Hence, knowing that all passengers are safe in this rugged off-roading monster will go a long way in popularizing it and enhancing its appeal further. Not only that, the SUV already bagged a cool 1.76 lakh bookings within the first hour itself. Clearly, the demand for this practical off-roading machine was already there. Let us keep an eye out for what this Bharat NCAP rating does to that demand.
