Mahindra Thar Roxx MX3 vs MX5 – Specs
Now, the Mahindra Thar Roxx is on sale with multiple engine and transmission options. Depending on the variant, you can choose between petrol and diesel engines with manual and automatic transmissions and RWD and 4WD configurations. This is a great example to showcase the wide range of alternatives available with the off-roading SUV. The MX3 iteration can be had with both petrol and diesel mills. The petrol manual comes with a 2.0-litre mStalltion turbo engine which makes 162 PS and 330 Nm while the automatic trim makes 177 PS and 380 Nm of peak power and torque. The MX3 is solely on offer with the latter.
On the other hand, the diesel mill is good for a decent 163 PS and 330 Nm with the manual, whereas the automatic version produces 175 PS and 370 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. One can choose either the manual or automatic version with the MX3. Similarly, the MX5 has the same powertrain but adds the option of a manual transmission with the petrol guise and a 4×4 manual with the diesel. Therefore, one needs to decide carefully which engine and transmission combination is best suited for his/her needs. In the table below, you can get the details of all the available options.

Engine | 2.0L Turbo Petrol | 2.2L Turbo Diesel |

Design and Dimensions
In terms of design, both models look, more or less, the same. However, there are some key giveaways which can tell the two apart. In general, both these boast a familiar front fascia with round headlamps and a massive grille with a rugged bumper. The fog lamp is positioned on the extreme corner of the bumper. On the sides, the chunky wheel arches and the dedicated door for the rear passengers separate it from the 3-door model. Also, while the MX3 trim gets 18-inch steel wheels, the MX5 uses diamond-cut alloys which marks a key distinction between the two variants. Furthermore, the latter also gets LED DRLs, which are missing on the MX3.
Then the LED projector fog lamps are only available on the MX5 variant and not the MX3. These are the key differences on the front and the sides of the two models. However, what I appreciate a lot is the fact that the rear end is similar on every trim. This includes LED taillamps with a partial opening window and a sturdy bumper. Overall, the lighting and alloy wheels are the biggest differences on the outside to distinguish the two. In fact, I am sure most people can cover this gap by purchasing these as accessories. Since it is the same car, the dimensions are identical.
Dimensions (in mm) | Mahindra Thar Roxx |
Length | 4,428 |
Width | 1,870 |
Height | 1,923 |
Wheelbase | 2,850 |
My View
I understand that choosing between these two compelling variants of the Mahindra Thar Roxx can be quite tricky. In all honesty, both these versions have their distinct appeal. However, I feel it all depends on the preferences of the customers and what they want from the car. For instance, if you are on a strict budget and are okay with compromising a bit on the latest features and tech, the MX3 makes a lot of sense. You just need to keep in mind that there is no manual gearbox option with the petrol mill even though the diesel version is available with both. On the other hand, if you prefer some additional features and even want to go for the 4×4 drivetrain, you are left with no option but to go for the MX5 trim. In that way, there is always a choice for everyone depending on their budget and what they want from the vehicles. In any case, you can’t go wrong with either of these.
