Mahindra Thar Roxx took the industry by storm after it bagged a whopping over 1.76 lakh bookings within the first hour
In this post, we are comparing the Mahindra Thar Roxx AX5L vs AX7L to determine which version suits your needs the most. Thar Roxx is the 5-door iteration of the regular Thar. However, it is not a mere extension of the body. In fact, the Indian SUV maker has introduced a new M_GLYDE platform, tweaked the powertrains, introduced loads of new-age tech, connectivity, convenience and safety features and redesigned the exterior slightly to ensure that it feels like a new car. It even adopts the new nomenclature from Mahindra which we first saw on the XUV700. For now, let us watch these top variants in the flesh next to each other.
Mahindra Thar Roxx AX5L vs AX7L – Price
The main point of differentiation between these two is the price. The Thar Roxx AX5L 4×4 diesel automatic has a price tag of Rs 20.99 lakh, ex-showroom. On the other hand, the top-of-the-line AX7L 4×4 diesel automatic retails for Rs 22.49 lakh, ex-showroom. Hence, there is a clear gap of Rs 1.5 lakh in ex-showroom prices. This is where the customers will have to make up their minds about whether or not the extra amount is worth the goodies Mahindra has to offer.
Price (ex-sh.) | AX5L | AX7L |
Mahindra Thar Roxx (4×4 – D) | Rs 20.99 lakh | Rs 22.49 lakh |
Mahindra Thar Roxx AX5L vs AX7L – Exterior and Styling
This video comes to us courtesy of Atharva Dhuri on YouTube. The vlogger has the two models side by side. At the front, there are barely any differences between the two. They both get round LED headlamps with LED DRLs, an identical grille, a rugged bumper, fender-mounted LED turn indicators and fog lamps on the extreme edges of the bumper. However, the AX7L gets the 360-degree camera nestled between the slats of the grille while the AX5L doesn’t get that feature. Moving on the sides, most elements are similar but the alloy wheel design and size are distinct. On the top trim, you will get elegant 19-inch alloys, whereas on the AX5L, there are 18-inchers. At the rear, the AX7L gets a full-sized alloy as the spare wheel. On the other hand, the AX5L gets a steel wheel which is covered in a dedicated compartment mounted on the tailgate. Hence, the rear section has the main difference between the two.

Specs
Now, both these models are diesel automatics. This means that they get a potent 2.2-litre mHawk turbo diesel mill which generates 175 PS / 380 Nm of peak power and torque. This engine pairs with a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. In the top AX7L trim, there are loads of additional off-roading amenities like Intelli-turn and Crawl. However, the AX5L also gets a regular 4×4 drivetrain. In any case, there is not much to choose from in this regard as the engine-transmission combination is identical.
Specs | Mahindra Thar Roxx (D) |
Engine | 2.2L Turbo Diesel |
Power | 163 PS / 175 PS |
Torque | 330 Nm / 370 Nm |
Transmission | 6MT / AT |
Drivetrain | 4×2 / 4×4 |
My View
Choosing between these two can be a bit tricky. There are barely any differences between the outside or engine and transmission. However, the main difference lies in the amount of features on offer. If you want to get pampered by all the bells and whistles associated with the Mahindra Thar Roxx, going for the top trim makes a lot of sense. You just need to have a flexible budget. On the other hand, you can even save some money by opting for the AX5L variant which also offers most features you will need. Hence, it depends on personal preference.
