Mahindra Thar 5-Door Front Grille Spied
These images come to us from a source who wishes to stay anonymous. The main focus of this spy image has to be the front grille. Mahindra famously stays in controversies regarding the front grille of the Thar in some international markets. The point of contention remains the resemblance with the Jeep Wrangler. In fact, the famous vertical slats in this grille have a common inception. Back in the day, Willys had given a license to Mahindra to sell the Jeep here using the assembled parts. As a result, this grille and the iconic retro design theme carry on even till today. That is exactly the case with Wrangler. In essence, Mahindra is legally allowed to sell the Thar with this grille in India.

However, as the competition gained in international markets like the USA and Australia for the Wrangler from Thar, the American SUV maker challenged the design similarity of the Thar with the Wrangler. This is critical since from the outside, the SUVs resembled each other in design but the price difference is colossal. For reference, in India, the Thar retails between Rs 10.98 lakh and Rs 16.94 lakh, ex-showroom, while the Wrangler has a price tag of Rs 52.65 lakh to Rs 66.65 lakh, ex-showroom. In essence, the Wrangler is around 5 times more expensive than the Thar. What’s more impressive is the fact that Thar also offers some insane off-roading capabilities. Therefore, the buyers got more interested in saving a huge amount of money without compromising too much on the off-roading capabilities.

Author’s Note
In any case, the vertical slats on the front grille of the Thar remain a critical component in its overall charm. Recognising this, Mahindra won’t tinker too much with this grille even in the 5-door guise. Still, there are clearly some distinctions to ensure that one can tell the 3-door and 5-door apart on the road. Apart from that, the upcoming 5-door Thar will likely feature similar powertrain and gearbox combinations as the 3-door version. The added wheelbase will ensure more legroom for the rear passengers and a much larger boot space. Let us keep an eye out for the launch of the longer Thar, which might occur in the first half of 2024.
