The upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door was seen with a dual-pane sunroof in the latest spy images. The larger Thar has been in the works for a long time now. I have reported innumerable instances of the off-roading SUV performing rigorous road tests in the last few months. In fact, the Indian auto giant has been testing it extensively in extreme weather and terrain conditions as well. That is when we spotted it somewhere in the Himalayan regions. For now, let us take a look at the new details of the Mahindra Thar 5-door.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door with Dual-Pane Sunroof
This post comes from auto.thrust on Instagram. It captures an interesting image of the camouflaged Mahindra Thar 5-door with a dual-pane sunroof. That is the most enticing aspect of this image. We know that Indian customers are sunroof-obsessed. They treat it as a premium feature. Hence, carmakers have started offering it on most of their cars above the entry-level segment. Also, a sunroof is becoming an option in mid-level trims of cars as well. A carmaker like Maruti Suzuki, who was initially against the sunroof due to safety concerns, had to give in to the demand of the consumers. That is a testament to the fact that Indian customers are immensely attracted to having sunroofs in their cars.
The upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door will borrow the platform (chassis) and powertrains from the Scorpio N. Hence, we can expect it to come with a 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol engine and a 2.2-litre mHawk turbo diesel engine, with both manual and automatic transmission options. However, the biggest attraction has to be the sophisticated and hardcore off-roading kit on offer. It will ensure that the users will be able to traverse across all sorts of terrains. Also, the current prices of the 3-door Thar range from Rs 11.35 lakh to Rs 17.60 lakh, ex-showroom. The 5-door iteration will definitely bear a significant premium over these.
Our View
Mahindra Thar is an iconic name in the Indian automobile industry. This is particularly true for the off-roading enthusiasts. In its latest avatar, Thar has popularized the lifestyle off-roading segment in India considerably. To make it even more practical for daily use, the 5-door version will be launched. It will take care of the rear legroom, ingress and egress characteristics and a usable boot space. Hence, it will be interesting to see how well the customers embrace the 5-door iteration of the Mahindra Thar.
