- Upcoming 5-door version of Mahindra Thar will share its underpinnings with the Scorpio N
- New model to offer same engine options along with a similar interior space
There’s no denying the stellar success the second-get Mahindra Thar has been. Even though there’s a dedicated lot of enthusiasts that swear by the bold design and off-roading capabilities of this SUV, the 3-door layout does limit its popularity. Taking note of that, Mahindra & Mahindra is now close to introducing a 5-door version that will not only have a bigger body-shell but even different underpinnings. A test mule of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door was recently spied undergoing night-time testing on a highway.

Mahindra Thar 5-door Looks As Big As Scorpio N
Even though the test mules of the 5-door Thar are yet to shed any of that heavy camouflage, the large dimensions of the new SUV are easily apparent. There’s a definite increase in the wheelbase, which is thanks to the Scorpio N’s platform. In fact, the bigger side profile is likely to make the new model look even more like the Jeep Wrangler. As is the case with the 3-door model, even the bigger variant would bear clear discrepancy in the soft parts to ensure the uncanny resemblance doesn’t bother Jeep too much. That said, the large dimensions and the classic design should help the SUV with great street red.
The benefits of the Scorpio N-sourced platform won’t end here. The new underpinnings should even lead to better-sorted driving dynamics. This would further help the new SUV have a high appeal among family SUV buyers. As expected, even the engines will be shared with the latest-get Scorpio. Hence, the available engine options will include a 2.0-litre mStallaion Petrol and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel. Both the motors will be available with two transmission options- a 6-speed manual and an Aisin-sourced 6-speed automatic.

More Capable Off-Roader Than Scorpio N
While the engines will come from the Scorpio N, they will likely see a retune for application in the 5-door Thar. For the uninitiated, the turbo-petrol motor outputs a healthy 200 bhp and 370 Nm on the Scorpio N. Meanwhile, the oil burner produces 172.5 bhp and 400 Nm. It’s noteworthy that unlike the latest Scorpio, the upcoming Mahindra 5-door variant would come with locking differentials. This should make the new SUV a more capable off-roader than its parts donor.
