Just like the existing 3-door version, even the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door model will be sold in a budget RWD version that should be priced ultra competitively
It is already known that Mahindra is preparing to launch the 5-door Thar in India. The RWD variant of the upcoming SUV was recently caught testing and is likely to offer a similar package as the three-door iteration. Furthermore, the road test mules of the Thar 5-door have also been spotted and we have got a preview of the exterior, interior and seating layout of the Thar 5-door. This spy shot gives us even more details about the interior of the car and here are all the details you need to know about the upcoming Mahindra Thar.

Mahindra Thar 5-door to Take on Maruti Jimny
The upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door has been spied on a fully camouflaged test mule and clearly looks elongated, unlike the current 3-door Thar. This new version is likely to be based on the Scorpio-N’s platform and will have a wider stance than the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. The Thar 5-door is likely to be offered in two versions – RWD and 4WD. The Jimny on the other hand will be available only with a four-wheel drive configuration when launched in mid-2023.

While it is not yet known whether the Thar will be available with the 1.5-litre oil burner, it will not get the tax benefits as it is longer and will have a longer wheelbase than the three-door. We expect the 5-door Thar to be available with a hardtop as standard, unlike the 3-door version which also gets a soft top option. It will however boast a more spacious and comfortable cabin. The interior changes are clearly spotted in the spy shots and include the addition of a centre armrest for the front sheet occupants which is not available in the current 3-door Thar. The test mule misses out on the 4X4 lever at the front and has an AC vent for the second row. Also, a quick look at the boot space suggests that it will claim a large amount of storage.

Underpinnings shared with Scorpio N
As we can see in the mules, the rear door handle is mounted on the C-pillar and the washer/wiper in the rear windscreen is missing. The speakers in the test pictures are not mounted on the roof which indicates that Mahindra probably does not want anyone to remove the doors. Apart from these changes, the exterior and interior remain identical to the 3-door. It’s worth mentioning here that the 5-door Thar will share its underpinnings with the Scorpio N. This would translate into better dynamics than the 3-door version. Moreover, the more spacious cabin, aggressive pricing and the Scorpio N-like ride quality should help the 5-door version have a higher appeal among family car buyers.
