Launched at a starting price of Rs to Rs lakh, the top-spec Mahindra Scorpio N costs up to Rs 87,000 more than the old model of the popular SUV
The cat is finally out of the bag! The highly awaited 2022 Mahindra Scorpio N has just been launched. Bookings of the new SUV will start from 5 July, with deliveries expected to commence soon thereafter. The current Scorpio, however, will soldier on, albeit, as the Scorpio Classic. The old model is also expected to get a price cut, but for now, let’s take a good look at how the ‘Big Daddy of SUV’ is priced in comparison to the vehicle it replaces. However, the prices of the new Scorpio are introductory and applicable on first 25,000 bookings. Interesting, though, the starting price of the new SUV is Rs 55,000 lower than that of the base trim of the earlier model.

As you can see, the entry-level Scorpio N Petrol costs Rs 55,000 lesser than that of the base-level old Scorpio. The fully-loaded version, though, is Rs 87,000 costlier than the top-spec old Scorpio. However, it not only offers a more powerful engine but even a part-time 4WD. Of course, there are also many more features on offer. All of this means that the new model is a much better VFM proposition.
The outgoing SUV used to be available in 5 variants – S3 Plus, S5, S7, S9 and S11. On the other hand, the Scorpio N is available in a whopping 36 variants. Out of these, 13 belong to the petrol family, while the remaining 23 are powered by a diesel mill. But in all, the model is available in 5 trims – Z2, Z4, Z6, Z8 and Z8L. All these trims are available with a petrol and a Diesel engine option. Not only this, out of the above, all trims except for the Z2 are available with an automatic transmission option. 4WD, however, is restricted to just the Diesel engine variant. Also, the new SUV comes in 6- and 7-seater seating options.
Mahindra Scorpio N vs Old Scorpio Variant Distribution
In comparison, the outgoing SUV used to be available only with a 2.2-litre mHawk Diesel engine outputting a maximum power of 136.78 bhp and a peak torque of 319 Nm. The motor came mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The same specs are available across all the trim options. However, there are a lot of permutations and combinations available on the 2022 Mahindra Scorpio N. First things first, the new SUV is being sold with a powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that outputs a maximum power of 202 bhp and a peak torque of 370 Nm with the 6-speed manual transmission. The torque output is bumped up to 380 Nm when paired with an automatic transmission.

When it comes to the comparison of the diesel hearts, the new Scorpio N clearly holds an advantage over the old SUV. Compared to the near 137 bhp that the old Scorpio offered, the new SUV offers 130 bhp-300 Nm on the base trim but 175 bhp-400 Nm on the higher models. Not just this, the Scorpio N is even available with three driving modes – Zip, Zap and Zoom. In the Zip mode, the diesel engine produces 138bhp, while it offers 175bhp in Zap and Zoom modes.

4WD Option
The last-get Mahindra Scorpio was sold only with 2WD configuration towards the end of its lifecycle. But the Scorpio N will be available with part-time 4WD option on all trims except for the base Z2 version. What’s even better is that the Z8 and Z8 L trims allows you to choose 4WD along with automatic option. Dubbed ‘4Xplorer’, the 4WD system of the new SUV offers 4-high and 4-low gear ratios on its transfer case. There are a total of 4 modes on offer- Rough Road, Snow, Mud and Water. What can further help you improve the off-roading capabilities is the manual locking rear differential.
