Mahindra and Mahindra has done a great job with their global SUV codenamed Mahindra W201 which came out as Mahindra XUV500 and has created a ripple of enthusiasm and overwhelming response. The response for XUV500 has been so strong that Mahindra has to plan an increase in production capacity and delay the Pan-India launch and exports to meet the domestic demand created by launching it in 6 cities initially. We have also compared the XUV500 with some of the strong contenders from its segment here – XUV500 Vs Tata Aria , XUV500 VS Toyota Innova, XUV500 VS Scorpio and even a segment above – XUV500 Vs Toyota Fortuner.
Continuing with its revolutionary thinking and products, Mahindra with Ssangyong is developing a sub-4 meter mini SUV or maybe a crossover which will be powered by a 1.2 Litre petrol and 1.5 Litre diesel engine. The codename of the vehicle is Mahindra S101 which is expected to revolutionize the small car segment as there is a lot of sense in buying a good performance mini-SUV it it comes with loads of extra space and almost the same price tag of an affordable small car.

The mini-SUV S101 will be different from the Mahindra Mini Xylo which is due for its launch in a couple of months from now. The new mini-SUV S101 from Mahindra will be manufactured in the Chakan plant in Maharashtra. The Research and Development work on the S101 is on for about one year by a joint team of M&M and Ssangyong designers and engineers. The team involved in this project as of now is 100 people strong team and has been working on various aspects in details. The expected timeline of the launch of the Mahindra S101 is towards 2013 end.
With the aim of developing an affordable mini-SUV under 4 meter length and small engine, it will enjoy the excise benefits as per the automobile rules in India and will be priced aggressively to make a segment of its own just like XUV500 has done by delivering features of a segment above in an affordable package.
