Anand Mahindra shares an old and deep spiritual connection with the Golden Temple, and has often presented a copy of a new vehicle to Darbar Sahib
The 5-door Mahindra Thar Roxx is about to launch in our market and the speculations are rife about it being offered to the Golden Temple. This is a part of the age-old company tradition of Mahindra to offer a newly launched vehicle to the Golden Temple. Presumably, this is a way to seek the blessings of the Almighty. In fact, Anand Mahindra had been following this tradition for a long time. Back in 2013, he offered the Mahindra Rexton automatic to the iconic Sikh temple. That is what leads us to believe that we might witness something similar with the upcoming 5-door Thar too.
5-door Mahindra Thar Roxx at Golden Temple?
The 5-door iteration of Mahindra Thar has been undergoing extensive rigorous testing for a long time now. In fact, to ensure that the product is up-to-the-mark, the Indian auto giant took it to extreme corners of the country including the higher reaches of the Himalayas in Leh and Ladakh. Apart from that, it had been tested in the sandy terrains and highways. The aim is to make an SUV which is capable of traversing across any obstacle and road surface. Finally, the main attraction will be its extended wheelbase which will liberate a lot of space inside the cabin for more legroom and boot space. Not to mention, there will be some key updates inside the cabin in comparison to the 3-door trim.
The 5-door Thar will borrow the platform and powertrains from the Scorpio N. This means that we will see the 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol and a 2.2-litre mHawk turbo diesel engines with the off-roading SUV. The existing Thar also gets these engines but in lower states of tune. Apart from that, there will be manual and automatic transmission options. But the most hardcore aspect will be a sophisticated 4×4 technology which will ensure that the users are able to overcome any and every obstacle out on the road.
Our View
Anand Mahindra has a long history with the Golden Temple in Amritsar. He first visited during his college days in 1975. He arrived in the town of Amritsar from his college in the USA. At the time, he paid obeisance to the sacred temple and bought a ‘Kada’. For the unversed, it is the metallic wrist bangle which many people (especially men) wear. Interestingly, Anand Mahindra has never removed it since 1975. Clearly, he respects and values that ‘Kada’ a lot. Therefore, it is clear that he is an ardent devotee. It remains to be seen whether or not the new upcoming 5-door Mahindra Thar Roxx will be offered to the Golden Temple at the launch.
