Mahindra will be introducing a new 1.5L petrol engine on the Marazzo which they debuted at the 2020 Auto Expo. The engine produces 163bhp and belongs to Mahindra’s mStallion family of engines.
Mahindra is going to offer a new petrol engine in the Marazzo in the coming months. The diesel engine in the Marazzo will also be updated to comply with the BS6 emission norms and there will be a shuffle in the variant line-up as well. But coming back to the petrol engine, it will be a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine from Mahindra’s new mStallion engine family. Mahindra debuted the new mStallion range of engines at the 2020 Auto Expo.
The new mStallion range of engines are turbocharged, direct injection petrol engines with displacements of 1.2 litres (G12), 1.5 litres (G15) and 2.0 litres (G20). These engines are quite high tech and they feature integrated exhaust manifolds, off-set crankshafts, 250 bar fuel-injection rail systems and dual-mass flywheels.
As for the Marazzo, the 1.5-litre TGDI (turbocharged gasoline direct injection) engine makes a rather impressive 163hp and 280Nm of torque. This 1.5L G15 engine is essentially a four-cylinder version of the 1.2L three-cylinder G12 petrol engine that will be offered on the Mahindra XUV300 Sportz from April 2020. The G12 engine produces 130bhp, which will make the XUV300 the most powerful in its segment. The petrol engine in the Marazzo will be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard and there will be an Aisin-sourced 6-speed automatic as well.

With the addition of a petrol engine, it will certainly widen the appeal of the Marazzo. How it affects its sales is something we will find over time. To give a perspective, Maruti Suzuki sold 91,272 units of the Ertiga from February 2019 to January 2020. Out of these, the petrol-diesel split was near-even at 49-51. The Ertiga is a direct competitor for the Marazzo but if you look at the Toyota Innova which operates at the higher end of the MPV spectrum, sales are heavily inclined towards the diesel variant. Toyota sold 58,305 units of the Innova in the same period, out of which only 2% were petrol models.

The Marazzo will be the first car from Mahindra to sport the new 1.5L G15 petrol engine. This engine will also be featured on the Mahindra and Ford’s in-development midsize SUVs – codenamed S204 and B745, respectively. Like the diesel, we expect Mahindra Marazzo petrol prices to be bang between the Ertiga petrol’s Rs 7.59-11.21 lakh and Innova Crysta petrol’s Rs 15.36-21.34 lakh price ranges.
