This time, Mahindra S101’s even clearer picture has appeared in Autocar Magazine. It is not hard to make out from the pictures that S 101 is very closely inspired from XUV500 and it wouldn’t be unsafe to call it a mini version of the same. It is also being speculated that it will share several other features with XUV500. This vehicle will be positioned in market against other sub four meter crossovers like Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport, and others.
What differentiates this crossover from its parent car is its power source that is among the key elements of this car. It is being assumed that this vehicle will be carrying a front wheel drive sub four meter monocoque chassis. It is also expected that the power source of this car will be a four cylinder set that will support both diesel and petrol. Both the power mills will have an ability to churn power in the range of 76 to 101 PS. These engines will work in co-ordination with a newly designed set of 6 speed transmission gearboxes.
It has been collected from the word of mouth that Mahindra will be offering this cross over in both six passenger and eight passenger versions. The later version however seems doubtful considering the compact size of S 101. The pictures also reveal that the front seat lacks center console, this may allow the vehicle to accommodate three people in the first row.
As per latest reports, this vehicle is member of the front wheel drive crew of cars that Mahindra plans to launch in upcoming 2-3 years. S 101 will be the second offering from the home grown auto major after Quanto. It is also being expected that this crossover will be positioned below Quanto but the pricing strategy for the same will be much more aggressive than other models.

Our friends at Auto Car India recently posted a few snap shots of the Mahindra’s new SUV whose official identity has been camouflaged under the code name S101. As clear from the pictures, the SUV has been given a sporty touch that directly aims to other sporty SUVs like Maruti Alpha XA, Ford EcoSport, etc.
S101 is second Mahindra compact SUV after Quanto in this segment. However, it is being presumed that this sub-four meter SUV will be placed below Quanto, and the possibility of an aggressive pricing strategy cannot be denied. The test vehicle visible in picture seems in its juvenile stage and it seems that it will take Mahindra about 9-10 months to finally bring this SUV on floors.
An upgraded version of the same (codenamed S102) is also in its making, but that vehicle will be mainly targeted at the export market. It has also been reported that Mahindra has invested a hefty amount on development of a completely new range of diesel and petrol power mills at its Chennai Research Valley. As the word is out on street, at present three diesel and three petrol engines of 1.2 L, 1.5 L, and 1.6 L are in making.
As far as the S101 compact SUV is concerned, Mahindra plans to share its internal machineries with some of its other models in order to keep costs low. Mahindra was pretty successful in compressing seven seats in its under four meter version of Quanto, so one can expect that S101 might also be projected as a six, seven, or eight seater. Now how far this new SUV will go that is to be seen.
