The two Indian automobile giants have been posting healthy numbers on the sales charts for a long time now
Mahindra has overtaken Tata Motors on the sales charts for the month of January 2025. The Indian automobile market has been expanding rapidly and is now the 3rd largest in the world. In the last few years, it has experienced immense growth. With tons of new car models appearing, customers are spoilt for choice. Recently, the trend of EVs has also skyrocketed. Hence, carmakers are even shifting their focus on electric cars. This is particularly true with both Mahindra and Tata Motors. For now, let us take a look at the sales data.
Mahindra Claims Third Spot from Tata Motors
As per the Vahan app, the passenger vehicle registration figures for the top 10 OEMs for January 2025 are out. Unsurprisingly, the list is headed by Maruti Suzuki, followed by Hyundai. However, the third spot has been captured by Mahindra with a total sales of 51,306. This is much higher than January 2024 when this number was 42,258. This marks a decent 19.36% increase on a year-on-year basis. On the other hand, Tata Motors sold 48,460 cars in January 2025 in comparison to 48,258 cars in the same month last year. This is almost similar. Clearly, Mahindra has gained a significant edge over Tata Motors in the last month.
However, there is a slight catch in these figures. See, Tata Motors created a separate entity for its EVs. Hence, the sales numbers for Tata Motors include only ICE cars, while that of Mahindra incorporate ICE and EVs. Tata EV sold 5,007 EVs in January 2025 which is slightly less than what it sold in January 2024. Having said that, there is no denying the fact that Mahindra cars are gaining immense popularity among car buyers in India. In fact, the XEV 9e and BE 6 are the newest EVs launched in India. From now on, we will see how well the customers embrace these and they will start contributing to the sales soon.
My View
I believe healthy competition in the sales numbers is mandatory to keep carmakers on their toes. This ensures that they leave no stone unturned to create value-for-money products to woo the masses. Mahindra and Tata Motors boast incredibly inspiring stories of how they were able to rise through the ranks in the passenger car segment in India to reach where they are today. Remember, both these manufactured heavy-duty vehicles up until a few years ago and only ventured into passenger car space later. Let us see how the sales figures develop in the coming months.
