Mahindra & Mahindra is a diversified group and exists in all the automobile sectors. Be it the commercial vehicle segment or the two-wheeler sector, Mahindra has its own market and popularity. The two-wheeler division of Mahindra group has been actively trying to penetrate in the motorcycle market but hasn’t been able to get attention, though it has established itself in the gearless scooter segment.
The company had made its entry into the commuter bike segment with Mahindra Stallio but unfortunately it failed. A while back it announced it will come up with an upgraded version of the Stallio, so of the three new bikes, one will be the upgraded Stallio, the other Mahindra Mojo and the third model is undisclosed. Mahindra showcased Mojo around 2 years back but there was no update on the launch date, we also did a related What Happened To Mahindra Mojo? Finally there seems to be a timeline in horizon when we can expect the Mojo to launch.
Recently one of the top company official disclosed that Mahindra is planning to introduce three new motorcycles across different segments. Mahindra Two Wheelers Senior Vice-President (Strategy and Market Development) Viren Popli said
“We expect to launch three motorcycles this year. We have stopped production of Stallio. We will be making announcements about the newer version of Stallio very soon. There have been so many queries about Mojo. We have been consistently getting it from South, particularly from Chennai. It will be coming soon. It is undergoing some tests now”
Popli clearly said that the motorcycles will belong to different segments but when asked in depth about the same, declined to comment further. So far the company has developed two wheelers for the urban market but now it is working on the rural market in specific.
“Rural segment, those are the areas we are working on. There will be a product for the segment. We have looked at the moped segment as well (for launching a product in that segment,”
With the launch of three motorcycles, the current portfolio will expand to five products including two scooterettes. At present Mahindra is in collaboration with Taiwan based SYM for the sourcing of engines for Mahindra’s scooters but Popli disclosed that soon they will begin manufacturing engines on their own.
