- 5-door version of Mahindra Thar to be based on Scorpio N’s platform
- To feature same engines and offer similar space and dynamics
While the latest generation Mahindra Thar has been a runaway success, its demand is limited by the not-so-practical 3-door layout. Not to rest on its laurels, Mahindra has been working on a 5-door version for some time now. Interestingly, the new model would be based on the Scorpio N, which means a high road presence would be a given. Today, we have spy images from Chennai that confirm our belief.

Mahindra Thar 5-door Has Massive Road Presence
The recently spied test mule of the Mahindra Thar 5-door SUV wears heavy camouflage. However, it’s certainly a couple of shoe sizes larger than the existing version. The larger wheelbase is courtesy the Scorpio N’s platform. Meanwhile, the 5-door layout makes the Thar look a lot like the Jeep Wrangler. That said, Mahindra is sure to ensure a clear discrepancy in the styling to avoid controversies. What’s also for sure is the huge street presence that the upcoming SUV would enjoy.
The Scorpio N-sourced platform would even ensure better driving dynamics. This would clearly give the 5-door version an edge over the current model. Even the powertrain options would be carried over from the carmaker’s latest hot-seller. This means that the upcoming off-roader would be available with a 2.0-litre mStallaion Petrol and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine options. Transmission options would include a 6-speed manual and an Aisin-sourced 6-speed automatic.

More Capable Off-Roader Than Scorpio N
For the Scorpio N, the turbo-petrol motor outputs a healthy 200 bhp and 370 Nm. Meanwhile, the oil burner produces 172.5 bhp and 400 Nm. The upcoming Thar, however, could receive these motors in a new state of tune for optimized off-road performance. Also, unlike the Scorpio, the new Thar would offer locking differentials. Inside, the Mahindra Thar 5-door will offer a 3-row/7-seater layout. We even expect it to be more feature-laden than the 3-door sibling.
