The lightweight off-roading SUV will now make its way from India back to its home market
The made-in-India Maruti Jimny 5-door will now be sold in Japan and the waiting period has already reached 3.5 years. Jimny is an iconic machine and has a legacy of over 5 decades in international markets. However, the existing Indian model is the first time in its long history that it gets a 5-door arrangement. The aim is to offer more practicality without compromising the hardcore off-roading characteristics. Since India is a huge manufacturing hub for Maruti Suzuki, it is even making it for the native market of Japan.
Maruti Jimny Has 3.5 Years Waiting Period in Japan
Note that the 5-door Maruti Jimny has been launched in Japan as the Jimny Nomade. Within just 4 days of the launch, the company received 50,000 bookings. That has stretched the waiting period to over 3.5 years already. It was also reported earlier that the Indo-Japanese car marque has stopped taking orders. That is a testament to how well the Japanese customers have received the practical off-roader. It remains to be seen how Maruti Suzuki will deal with this situation. It is an almost foregone conclusion that the production will need to be ramped up.
Maruti Jimny is a capable off-roader which comes with a familiar 1.5-litre naturally aspirated K15B petrol mill that churns out a healthy 104.8 PS and 134.2 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. This engine pairs with a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic gearbox. This configuration uses Suzukiโs trademark ALLGRIP PRO 4×4 drivetrain with a locking differential and a low-range transfer case. This lends it immense prowess, especially when the owners decide to take it off-tarmac. In India, the prices range from Rs 12.74 lakh to Rs 14.95 lakh, ex-showroom.

My View
The fact that the demand for the practical off-roader is so high is a testament to the love people have for the Jimny moniker. The previous generation models had a 3-door layout which compromised the space inside the cabin along with ingress and egress characteristics. As more and more people start using the Jimny for family travels, having the convenience of 5 doors is critical. Let us see how well things shape up for the Jimny going forward.
