Unfortunate incidents are becoming common on Indian roads as people refuse to follow traffic regulations
In an absolutely tragic accident, a fully loaded container ended up falling on a Volvo XC90, claiming 6 lives of a family. I must admit this is a gut-wrenching event. Indian roads are notorious for being extremely dangerous due to the fact that road users don’t follow traffic rules vehemently. Volvo is considered the benchmark for safety. Their vehicles are some of the most rugged and safe in the world. But this latest incident confirms that there is no substitute for safe driving. Let us delve into the details of this case.
Loaded Container Falls on Volvo XC90
The specifics of this case stem from Prateek Singh on YouTube. This channel features content around road accidents frequently. On this occasion, it was reported that Chandram Yegapagol, 48, was the owner of the Volvo XC90 and he purchased it only a couple of months ago. He was the CEO of IAST Software Solutions in Bengaluru. He was travelling with his wife, son, daughter sister-in-law and sister-in-law’s daughter on the Nelmangala-Tumkuru highway in Karnataka towards Sangli in Maharashtra. Suddenly, a heavy container, carrying aluminium, lost control in the opposite lane.
Within a matter of seconds, it crossed the divider and ended up crashing into the Volvo XC90. Due to the impact, the entire vehicle was buried under the truck and the vehicle was reduced to almost nothing. Unfortunately, this accident killed everyone in the car on the spot. The truck driver, Arif, suffered injuries and he was admitted to the hospital. He claims that a car suddenly applied brakes in front of him and he steered away to protect the car which led him across the divider due to momentum. The Police have booked Arif for rash driving and death by negligence. I shall keep an eye out for how this investigation moves ahead.
My View
India is home to some of the most perilous incidents. We lose lakhs of lives each year in road accidents. As per the government data, this number was 1.7 lakh last year. Most of these incidents occur due to the negligence of the road users. Hence, it is high time we start following traffic regulations seriously and uncompromisingly so that our roads become safer than they currently are. If you find anyone flouting the rules, make sure to report them to the authorities so that appropriate action can be taken against them.
