LED vs HID Headlights
LED refers to Light Emitting Diode. These headlamps are popular in high-end cars although the technology is slowly but surely, trickling down to mass-market vehicles. They use semiconductors to transmit energy-emitting photons to create light. Since they can get hot, there are fans and heat sinks installed with these lights to keep the temperature in check. These have a brightness of around 9,000-10,000 lumens, a life span of 45,000 hours, and are typically more expensive than HIDs.

HID refers to High-Intensity Discharge. This setup uses a combination of gas and metals to produce light when the filament receives heat. Some of these don’t use a filament and instead charge xenon through electrodes with high voltage. Their brightness is around 8,000 lumens, and their life span is significantly lower than LEDs at around 15,000 hours but they are also cheaper than the LEDs. Both these have a light throw of up to 300 m which is sufficient for night driving conditions.

Who should choose what?
If you don’t primarily drive during the nighttime, HIDs would do the trick. These are relatively inexpensive and have enough range, especially if you live in a city with street lights around. On the other hand, if you drive at night a lot, it might be wise to invest in a long-lasting LED headlight setup that will take care of the maintenance and replacement for a long time. The extra money will be compensated with a long life.
