Well, it is not a matter of specifics but principles, is what they say. This lawyer from Mumbai has proved that the judicial system of the country punishes the guilty.
A Mumbai-based lawyer sues Ola after he was charged unfairly and demanded compensation. It is a common phenomenon that you end up paying more than what was being displayed on the Ola app. The drivers don’t generally have much say in this and people often tend to ignore small price hikes unannounced to save them from the hassle for a few bucks. However, that is not what Shreyans decided to do when he was asked to pay Rs 434 instead of Rs 372 that was displayed at the beginning of his ride.

Lawyer Sues Ola, Gets Compensation
In June 2021, Shreyans had taken a trip in an Ola vehicle from Kandivali to Kalachowki with his family. The trip was supposed to cost him Rs 372 but by the time the trip ended, the mount was changed to Rs 434 without any fathomable reason. He decided to pay it for the time being but decided to lodge an official complaint in the consumer forum. The matter was clearly about the lack of transparency rather than a slight increase in the amount. The 34-year old lawyer had decided to approach customer care but didn’t get any response. Needless to say, his family members discouraged him to pursue this matter further for such a petty amount. But he was resolute and rightly took it as a matter of fair practice and principles.
The case was put before the consumer court in August and the proceedings began in December (2021). As a part of the judgement, Shreyans was awarded a compensation of Rs 10,000, while Rs 5,000 was awarded as the cost of complaint, totalling Rs 15,000. Shreyans said that he understands that Rs 62 is not a big amount but he wants Ola to make changes to their software so that such an issue would not crop up in the future. Because with the number of users Ola has, this amount becomes massive if it happens to even 1,000 users in a day. That is what Shreyans fought for.

Speaking to The Better India, Shreyans says, “The fare from when we started our ride to our destination increased by Rs 62 for no apparent reason. Despite trying to speak to a customer support staff multiple times I was unsuccessful. The driver, who by then was agitated, asked me to pay the amount. The driver kept saying, ‘Such things happen and people always pay up’. This incident also restores our faith in the judicial system and people would prefer to approach consumer courts knowing that irrespective of how big a firm is, there is no room for foul practices and punishment awaits the guilty party.
