KTM has been testing a new automated manual transmission (AMT) for some time now and the prototype of one has been showcased at the Erzberg Rodeo 2024 in Austria. Interestingly, this new gearbox was equipped on a camouflaged KTM model. But its overall demeanour evidently indicates that it is a hardcore off-roading motorcycle. My guess is that it could be the 2025 1390 Super Adventure. It will rival the prominent products in this space including something like the BMW R 1300 GS and R 1300 GS Adventure.
KTM Reveals New Automatic Transmission
This motorcycle, which came to light recently, was a part of the iconic Erzberg Rodeo 2024. It is a challenging off-roading terrain where only the toughest bike survives. Hence, the bikes participating in this competition bear impressive engineering capabilities. The team at KTM explains the specifics of this AMT gearbox. There is no clutch on this prototype. The riders get the option of either letting the gears change automatically or use their fingers to operate the gears manually via a button or the foot lever on the left. As you can imagine, this would ease the riding characteristics of the motorcycle a lot.
We already know that AMT cars are extremely popular on the budget end of the spectrum. The reason for that is quite simple. An AMT doesn’t require all that many modifications to the regular gearbox assembly. Only the clutch operation is automated. Hence, these are relatively cheaper to manufacture in comparison to other sophisticated automatic transmissions. While we have not seen these being implemented on bikes yet, I believe the principle remains the same.
Our View
Innovations in the two-wheeler world are often limited. This is especially true as the entire world is focusing on electric vehicles at the moment. Hence, something like an AMT gearbox in a KTM bike is definitely a revolution. It will be put through its paces in this Erzberg Rodeo 2024 race where the terrains are treacherous and challenging. It will be interesting to see if this transmission becomes mainstream in times to come. We can relate to people wanting a setup which eliminates the need for a clutch.
