Kia has officially opened bookings for the Sonet sub-compact SUV in India today. You can visit your nearest Kia dealership to book the car for a token amount of Rs 25,000 or you can also book the car online at the company’s official website. The launch of the Sonet will happen sometime in September and price of the sub-compact SUV is expected to range between Rs 7-12 lakh, ex-showroom.
Kia Motors unveiled the Sonet sub-compact SUV earlier this month and it has already garnered a lot of positive response. An expansive features list, equally expansive powertrain options and handsome looks – the Sonet has it all to take on the competition with a storm. A leaked brochure of the Kia Sonet has already revealed to us the variant-wise features and the powertrain options that would be available with each variant.
Just like the Seltos, the Kia Sonet too will be available in two trim lines – GT Line and Tech Line. However, unlike the Seltos, the variant lineup of the Sonet is much simpler. Under the two broad trim lines, there will be six variants on offer – HTE, HTK, HTK+, HTX, HTX+ and GTX+. There are five variants under the Tech Line while the GT Line comes in a single fully loaded GTX+ variant.

The Kia Sonet will be offered with the same powertrain options as the Hyundai Venue. That means there will be a 83hp 1.2L Kappa petrol engine; the 120hp 1.0L Turbo-petrol engine while the 1.5L diesel engine will be offered in two states of tune. Transmission options on the Sonet will include a 5-speed MT for NA petrol, a 6-speed MT for the diesel and the DCT for turbo-petrol motor. The 1.0L turbo-petrol engine will also be offered with Hyundai’s new iMT clutchless-manual gearbox that debuted on the Venue earlier this month.

Interestingly, Kia is also offering a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox with the diesel engine which is segment first feature, while its competition is using AMTs. With the automatic gearbox, the 1.5L diesel engine in the Sonet will produce 115hp and 250Nm of torque – the same as the Seltos. However, with the 6-speed manual gearbox, the engine has been tuned to produce 100hp and 240Nm of torque. Prices for the diesel-AT variant of the Sonet will be quite high and closer to that of the entry-level Seltos. Kia however wants to at least offer this option to its customers.
