The upcoming sub-4m Kia Clavis SUV was spotted testing overseas recently. Going by dimensions, it will position itself between the existing Sonet and Seltos. Initially, we had thought that the Clavis would be Kia’s counterpart to Hyundai Exter. But it doesn’t look like the case. Kia might be planning to offer something unique to its Indian customers. Reportedly, the Clavis could draw power from either a petrol or an electric powertrain. Some reports also suggest a hybrid powertrain. Let us dive deep into the details of this SUV.

These images come from autospy website. They showcase an SUV with a tall boy silhouette. Sure, the entire body is under a heavy camouflage. However, we can make out some styling details. For instance, it looks like it will carry the modern vertical headlamp unit orientation just like on new Kia EVs. The grille area is colossal as well. It could possess fog lamps and a rugged skid plate along with a sporty bumper. On the sides, there are utilitarian roof rails and sporty alloy wheels. Unfortunately, the rear section is completely disguised under a thick black covering. All in all, the Clavis will bear a tall-boy stance with adventurous characteristics.

Since this project is still in its initial stages, there are no official announcements regarding the powertrain options on offer. Still, going by various reports, it will come with petrol and electric options. In fact, a hybrid engine could also be offered. Even though the aesthetics of the Clavis indicate a rugged appearance and stance, it will strictly be a front-wheel-drive SUV only. Still, more details will emerge closer to the launch which might take place in early 2025. However, we could see it debut by the end of this year itself. The electric version could join the lineup 6 months after the launch of the petrol variant.

Author’s Note
Kia is among the most successful foreign carmakers in the country. Its Sonet, Seltos, Carens, Carnival and EV6 have been mega-successful in their respective segments. It is not all that common for a carmaker to have all successful products in its portfolio. Hence, the Korean auto giant wants to expand its footprint in our market. It will be interesting to see if the consumers will embrace the standalone vehicle from Kia which is not based on a Hyundai counterpart.
